Tools and Technology for Open Research: Following the Open Research Life Cycle

Tools and Technology for Open Research: Following the Open Research Life Cycle Online

Jacob Macdonald is a Research Data Scientist with the Consumer Data Research Centre and Geographic Data Science Lab (University of Liverpool). He has a particular interest in making data and research accessible to all, championing open data and research transparency. As a Data Scientist with the CDRC he is involved in the creation of data products and analyses leveraging the spatial structure of geographic data

The first half of this session showcases the life cycle of an open data research project from data collection to communicating and visualizing the results. As open data and software become increasingly accessible to researchers, practitioners, planners and the general public, data- and research-driven studies can help provide insights to a wide-ranging audience. The second half of the session will be a demonstration and online tutorial will run through an application of open research for the study of employment centres across England. Source materials, code and data are available for those with an interest in following along simultaneously or after the session. For those who are interested in following along in the demonstration an online a Github link will be shared which includes the code, data and walkthrough tutorial.

It is not mandatory to attend both parts of this session, although the more the merrier.

Open Research Week is supported by the Institutional Strategic Support Fund (ISSF) awarded by The Wellcome Trust to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, University of Liverpool
