Research Café – open research practices

Research Café – open research practices Online

Research cafes are an opportunity to PhD students and academic researchers to share their work in an informal environment.  This café will have a focus on Open Research, how researchers may use open data for research projects, create outputs that are openly accessible and/or work collaboratively with others and share what they do.

The speakers at this event are:

Dr. Linda Kaye, @LindaKKaye Reader in Psychology, Edge Hill University: Using Online Data in research: The fundamental aim of psychologists is to understand human thought and behaviour.  The online world provides us with a wealth of evidence of human behaviour in the form of online data.  It is surprising therefore that psychologists have not made greater use of this data in their investigations.  This talk will introduce you to the ethics and practicalities of using online data in research to help answer questions about human perceptions and emotion, and society more generally.  It will cover different types of online data such as smartphone behaviours and social media behaviours and give examples of how to extract online data for analysis.

Dr Alan Greaves, @Alan_M_Greaves Senior Lecturer Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, led a major DCMS/Cultural Protection Fund project in Turkey to promote use of digital recording of heritage at risk of vandalism, theft or destruction across the Middle East. However, there were a number of barriers to stakeholder take up of the approach and so he began to systematically research and evaluate freeware alternatives in order to democratize and decolonize digital recording of the region's heritage resources.
