Institution-wide approaches to embedding Universal Design for Learning Online
This event will explore De Montfort University's journey over the last five years as it has navigated its institution-wide adoption of UDL.
Universal Design for Learning acknowledges that all learners engage differently and from a range of backgrounds.
It explores the possible disconnect between a diverse student population and a one-size-fits-all curriculum, asking the question ‘Is the curriculum disabling’? (Murphy, 2021). To address this, tutors are encouraged to design for expected population-level variability. The approach becomes the framework for lesson plans and a vehicle to bring about inclusive education (Capp, 2017).
At the core UDL highlights three key approaches for a teacher
- Provide multiple means of engagement
- Provide multiple means of representation
- Provide multiple means of action & expression
It uses findings from neuroscience such as networks in the brain (recognition, strategic, and effective) to develop this approach.
This video provides an introduction to the concepts and the CAST website is full of great resources and explores the topic in more depth.
