Savera UK - Understanding cultural differences, sensitivity, and harmful practices (2) In-Person

The Diversity and Inclusion Team are pleased to invite Savera UK onto campus again to deliver this session. This will be the same session that took place on 23rd November 2023. Venue: Student Life Building, Room 206.

Understanding cultural differences, sensitivity, and harmful practices will give the audience a brief presentation on culture and harmful practices including ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA), forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). It will also touch on understanding cultural sensitivity and how important it is when working and supporting those at risk of ‘honour’-based abuse and harmful practices. This session will discuss harmful practices and encourage the audience to appropriately manage their own engagement with diverse cultures. The session will encourage participants to reflect on their level of awareness and knowledge surrounding cultural harmful practices and explain how to approach cases with culturally sensitivity.

Outcomes of this session includes:

  • Better understanding of cultural and harmful practices
  • Feeling more confident in asking questions about harmful practices
  • Being informed of the reasons behind harmful practices
  • Identifying some of our own biases and assumptions
  • Understanding why cultural sensitivity is important
  • Being better equipped to challenge discrimination and promote equality
  • Being better equipped in providing a culturally sensitive support

This session will be delivered by Savera UK. Savera UK is a leading charity working to end ‘honour’-based abuse (HBA) and other culturally specific abuse and harmful practices. ‘Savera’ means ‘new beginning’ in Hindi, which is symbolic of what we provide for survivors and those at risk of HBA and harmful practices, regardless of age, culture, sexuality, gender or ethnicity.
