Once more, with feeling. Replications in history

Once more, with feeling. Replications in history Online

This project from Digital History Utrecht experiments with replication of historical research to achieve a more open and reliable knowledge production in the humanities. Although the data repositories that historians use are often open, the way historians actually select and interpret their data that in turn validate their findings remains opaque. By replicating cornerstone studies from three historical subdisciplines, this project attempts to make this process more transparent and publicly accountable and thus in line with the principles of Open Science.

Pim Huijnen works as an Assistant Professor of Digital Cultural History at Utrecht University. His main interests are in the circulation of knowledge between science and popular culture. He uses and develops digital techniques to do his research, mostly focusing on quantitative text analysis. Next to this, he experiments with the digitisation of historical material, as well as with digital means of presentation, dissemination, and collaboration.

Pieter Huistra is Assistant Professor in Theory of History at Utrecht University.  He specializes in historical epistemology and historical methodology.  Two questions are central to his current research. First: how do historical facts come into existence? A question that he seeks to answer through the case of nineteeth-century debates on the invention of the printing press. Second: can historical research be repeated? This question he addresses, together with Pim Huijnen, by experimenting with replication and reproduction in historiography.
