Teaching Insights: Capturing Perspectives: Harnessing the Power of Photo Voice for Transformative Assessment In-Person
Photovoice, a participatory research method approach utilizing photography and sharing narratives that depict matters of importance, has gained pedagogical interest. Among those, Trask et al (2024) identified Photovoice as a ‘promising avenue’ for teaching and learning. However, the anticipated benefits of Photovoice as a teaching and learning device has not resulted in the production of robust empirical examination. Additionally, the literature is limited when Photovoice is examined as an assessment device. This point is furthered by Wang (2020, p17) when they established that,
“Despite a dearth of empirical studies which explicitly focus on using photovoice as an assessment tool, the existing literature suggests a potential role of photovoice as a useful assessment tool in education”.
This seminar will explore gaps in the Photovoice literature by providing a case study on how the approach was used for assessment. The seminar will provide a reflection by Lindsey Gaston who adopted Photovoice as an assessment device, highlighting the appropriateness of Photovoice and the challenges he faced when designing and evaluating the assessment.
Participants will explore the principles of Photovoice with the aims to empower educators to develop novel approaches to teaching and assessment that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and application of knowledge in authentic contexts.
This event will be held in-person in the Student Life Building, Room 2.06.
Hosted by the Teaching and Learning Academy, this event is part of the Teaching Insights series and will be facilitated by Dr Lindsey Gaston, Liverpool Business School, Faculty of Business and Law.
