Creative Intercultural and Mother Tongue Workshop

Creative Intercultural and Mother Tongue Workshop In-Person

Liverpool John Moores University is excited to collaborate with The Windows Project, a local charity, to offer two workshops this October!

This year’s Black History Month theme is “Reclaiming Narratives,” which marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.

Within these workshops, Staff and Students will have the opportunity to create culturally rich poems and artwork with the guidance of creative tutors from The Windows Project.

The Windows Project was created in 1976 by poets and writers, in order to introduce marginalised groups to the power of language as a creative tool. Their workshops use a game-based approach to encourage creativity; and take place in many different settings across the Liverpool City Region.

Workshops:

Each workshop will be 1.5 hours – In person, with location TBC Redmonds/Student Life Building

  • Thursday 10th October – 1.30-3pm
  • Mother Tongue Game Workshop – Writing Tutors will guide participants through the Mother tongue game to create poems combining languages from Black cultures as groups or individually. The game encourages participants to connect with their roots and express themselves in languages they might speak at home.
  • Thursday 24th October – 1.30-3pm
  • Inspired Art Workshop – Using inspiration from the poems created in the previous workshop before artwork will be created, there will be creative freedom for workshop facilitators and participants.

By emphasising “Reclaiming Narratives,” we shine a brighter light on our stories and history.

Who is this workshop for?

The workshop is designed for all staff and students who want to embrace an open and creative space to share their culture and narrative with others and create poems or artwork to showcase this.

Participants do not have to attend both workshops and can pick and choose; we would advise going to both but understand people express themselves in different ways and may have preferences.

At the end of the session, participants will:

Have created poems and artwork that the Diversity and Inclusion Team will display at their following event! Sharing your work will showcase your creativity and culture to fellow staff and students.
