Understanding Reasonable Adjustments and Access to Work Online

In our previous Embracing Neurodiversity event held in December 2023, we had the privilege of having Helen Musgrove, Director of Psychological Consulting at Lexxic, deliver an insightful session on Neurodiversity and Adjustments: Key Principles and Practical Examples. Through this partnership with Lexxic, the Diversity and Inclusion Team strives to empower staff to create positive differences in their areas and contribute towards a more inclusive organisation.

Lexxic, a renowned psychological consultancy, is dedicated to the belief that every mind deserves recognition and acceptance. With a steadfast mission to foster a world that embraces and appreciates the unique abilities of neurodivergent individuals, they strive to empower each person to reach their full potential. Collaborating with both organisations and individuals, Lexxic actively works towards creating inclusive and supportive environments.

Reasonable adjustments are changes to the working environment or working arrangements that remove or reduce a disadvantage related to a disability (including neurodifferences) or health condition.

This session will explain what we mean by reasonable adjustments, the law and principles that underpin them, examples of common adjustments and the support available for implementing adjustments via the Government’s Access to Work scheme.  Specifically, participants should come away with an understanding of:

•    What reasonable adjustments are and why they are necessary.
•    The laws on reasonable adjustments contained in the Equality Act (2010).
•    Who is entitled to reasonable adjustments.
•    What is meant by ‘reasonable’.
•    The principles of effective adjustments.
•    The LJMU Workplace Reasonable Adjustment Passport (WRAP)
•    Examples of adjustments that may be useful to address specific challenges or barriers in the workplace
•    What the Access to Work Scheme is, how it can help and how to make an application.
•    How to identify and implement appropriate adjustments in practice, using case study examples.

Who is this workshop for?

The workshop is designed for all staff who want to find out more about how to discuss reasonable adjustments. The Workplace Reasonable Adjustment Passport (WRAP) is designed to discuss various types of adjustments, including, not limited to, disability, caring responsibilities and changing circumstances in a colleague’s life.
